Liverpool sent Son Heung-min transfer message and Declan Rice warning

Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann has said Son Heung-min would be a "brilliant" signing for the Reds amid suggestions Jurgen Klopp needs to bolster his squad.

Saturday's defeat at home to Leeds leaves Klopp's team ninth in the Premier League, some eight points adrift of the top four. Things have been going better in Europe, where the Reds beat Napoli to finish their group stage campaign on a high, but injuries to Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz have left them light in attack.

Diaz was brought in towards the end of the January 2022 window, demonstrating that the Merseyside club are prepared to invest for the right player midway through the season. While Hamann has been full of praise for Son, though, he has questioned whether Declan Rice - who is languishing in the bottom half with West Ham - would be the right fit.

"Son is a brilliant player and he would be a brilliant signing for Liverpool - I'm a big fan of his," Hamann told Boylesports. "He's technically very gifted, can finish with both feet and he's a very smart player so he'd be a great signing and should seriously be considered but we know that Liverpool haven't been the biggest spenders and I think Son could cost a bomb.

"If there was an opportunity to sign him, he'd be a great player for Liverpool," the German added. There is no sign that Spurs would be willing to part ways with Son, though, and Spurs joined Liverpool in the Champions League knockout stages after leaving it late to win in Marseille.

Central midfield is also a problem position for Liverpool, with Fabinho coming in for criticism during a tough campaign. Jude Bellingham has long been linked with an Anfield move, while Bellingham's England colleague Declan Rice has also attracted speculation, but Hamann has issued a warning to his old employers.

"Liverpool are 14 or 15 points behind the top of the table now and I don't think that one player makes up that many points," Hamann continued. "Danny Murphy is right to suggest Declan Rice is a very capable player but I think it depends on how Fabinho comes back into the season because he's been really disappointing but he's a really brilliant player.

"I would like Liverpool to sign someone a bit more adventurous, someone like Joelinton from Newcastle who has a physical presence can get you a goal and he has the full package. A player like him would suit Liverpool down to the ground. I think getting a player of his quality in January is near enough impossible and that should've been done in the summer."

Liverpool are due to face Tottenham in their next Premier League game, but Son could end up missing the clash. The former Bayer Leverkusen star appeared to suffer a head injury during the game against Marseille and may need to go through concussion protocols before the weekend fixture.
