Liverpool sent Man City Champions League message as club chief slams 'arrogant' Sadio Mane claims

Here are your Liverpool morning headlines for Monday, June 27.

Man City chief sends blunt message to Liverpool

Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano has insisted the bosses at the club are not 'obsessed' with winning the Champions League.

The Premier League champions have been in the final just once when they lost to Chelsea in 2021. Pep Guardiola's side were moments away from their second final in two years last season, but a late collapse against Real Madrid ended their chances of taking on rivals Liverpool in the showpiece final in Paris.

Pressure is not coming from the clubs hierarchy to win the competition, Soriano has highlighted how City have simply been unlucky so far in their Champions League journey.

Speaking on the Dr Football Podcast (via SportBible ), Soriano said: “We don’t make this [the Champions League] the core of our objectives because of what I said; luck plays a role in the Champions League because there are a handful of games that you can have a bad game in, in the semi-finals and you’re out.

“Whoever wins the league is the best team in the league. We say internally, ‘The league is our bread and butter. This is what we do for a living; the league'.

“The Champions League is an additional trophy that we want but we know that it might be subject to a bit of luck so we’re not obsessed.”

Borussia Dortmund chief hits back at 'arrogant' Sadio Mane claims

Borussia Dortmund’s chief executive has criticised a former Liverpool player for their comments about Sadio Mane.

Mane recently completed a £35million move to Bayern Munich for the Reds , ending his six-year stay on Merseyside. Before allowing the Senegal international to depart, Liverpool brought in Darwin Nunez from Benfica.

Despite Liverpool receiving a fee in excess of what they paid Southampton for Mane in 2016, with a year left on his contract, the decision to let him leave Anfield confused Dean Saunders. The former Red said that he did not understand why Mane would have wanted to leave Liverpool, and questioned the standard of the Bundesliga.

"I’m still baffled why he’s gone," Saunders had told talkSPORT last week. "Why would you leave Liverpool when everybody loves you, the manager loves you, your teammates love you?"

"You’re playing in the best front-three you’re ever going to play in, in your life. You’re never gonna go to a better team than he’s in right now.

“It’s not a challenge. He will get in his armchair, light a cigar up, he’ll play for Bayern in third gear and he’ll coast for two years and ruin the best two years of his life as a footballer."

Saunders’ comments have now been criticised by Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke. The CEO of the German club has labelled the former Liverpool star as an “arrogant idiot” for his remarks about the Bundesliga, and made a dig at English clubs for their efforts in Europe last term.
