Liverpool sent clear message over future Chelsea spending as Graham Potter defends transfer approach

Graham Potter believes Chelsea's lucrative transfer business completed since the start of the season will not continue at the same rate.

The Londoners have spent over £600million on players since Todd Boehly took charge of the club in May, creating Financial Fair Play loopholes by spreading costs over contracts as lengthy as eight years.

Enzo Fernandez was the club's final piece of business during the January transfer window, arriving from Benfica after Chelsea triggered his £106.8million release clause on deadline day.

By contrast, Liverpool's conservative approach was highlighted by the sole addition to the squad of Cody Gakpo. Many supporters have argued the Reds have been crying out for investment in the midfield area, though FSG are expected to oversee a revamp of the squad in the summer.

Chelsea's ability to seemingly ability to part way with capital without fears over budgeting could be classed as a cause for concern for the Reds, but Potter does not anticipate the same level of spending will be maintained in the months ahead.

“I don’t think the spending will continue as it has. There was a regeneration and I think we have to say the next window and the window after will be different, that’s for sure," he told reporters.

Plenty of criticism has come the way of Chelsea after their ruthless approach to the transfer market, but the Chelsea head coach has insisted his side have simply acted in a 'creative' manner.

“I can understand the perspective. I disagree with it, but I understand it," stated Potter. "I think what we have tried to do is be creative. We have tried to invest in the now and the future. We are in a position where we want to keep improving. That is the ambition of the club.”

Chelsea's deal for Fernandez saw the World Cup winner become the most expensive signing in Premier League history, surpassing the £100m sum Manchester City paid for Jack Grealish in 2021. Liverpool were among the teams linked with Fernandez prior to the Argentine midfielder moving to Stamford Bridge, though Potter has insisted he had little to do with the 22-year-old choosing Chelsea.

"I'm the head coach so I don't get too involved in the nitty-gritty of deadline day. I am just totally focused on the next day's training and preparing the team for Fulham," he explained.

"I've been involved too long to know that there are some things you can't control and I couldn't do anything at that point to change things. I found out that we’d signed Enzo when it was all done and I'm very pleased, because he is a fantastic player."
