Liverpool sent '£60-70m' message over Curtis Jones along with Aston Villa transfer suggestion

Liverpool have been urged to respect what Curtis Jones brings to their squad as Jurgen Klopp and the Reds prepare to revamp their engine room next season.

Jones, 22, could be set to feature against Tottenham this afternoon (4.30pm) after starting the last five Premier League matches in central midfield. His inclusion has coincided with a formation change which sees Trent Alexander-Arnold pick up a hybrid role from his base position at right-back.

Alongside captain Jordan Henderson and Alexander-Arnold in possession, Jones has helped Liverpool to win three straight games in their continued push for European qualification. However, with midfield recruits on the way, Klopp has been reminded what Jones can add to his line-up.

Speaking about the midfielder, Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson said: "I quite like Curtis Jones, but he's not a name, is he? He's not a £60-70m player.

"I like him. I think he does a good job and he doesn't let you down. But he's not a superstar, so people then pick him out. He's a good player."

Merson added: "If he doesn't get on at Liverpool then I don't think he's doing any harm for himself to get a good move to someone in the summer like Aston Villa or somewhere like that.

"He never lets you down. He can play, gets forward and defends as well.

"But as you said, he will divide opinion because he's not an £80m player. He came through the ranks. Will he play every week next season? I wouldn't think so."
