Liverpool 'send scouts' to assess midfielder from Jurgen Klopp's old club

The latest Liverpool transfer rumour has seen the club linked with a move for Mainz midfielder Anton Stach.

Jurgen Klopp’s side continue to be credited with an interest in a host of potential new signings ahead of the summer transfer window. January saw the club not bring in any new midfielders, but the latest rumour is speculating that one could be on the way.

According to 90min, Liverpool are one of a number of clubs to have scouted Stach this season. In fact, the article states that the Reds have sent officials to watch the midfielder in action over the last couple of months.

The report states that Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and West Ham have joined Liverpool in expressing an interest in signing Stach. It has been claimed that all of those clubs have also sent scouts to watch the 24-year-old in action.

Mainz are a club that Klopp will know very well, both from his coaching career and playing days, The German spent 11 years as a player, before going on to manage the club for a further seven-and-a-half years until leaving for Borussia Dortmund in 2008.

Stach has been a key player for Mainz this season, being a regular in the Bundesliga club’s midfield. While predominantly being a more defensive-minded player, Stach - who has two caps for Germany to his name - is also capable of playing in more advanced roles in the middle of the park.

Following his performances with Mainz, Stach has earned plenty of admirers in the Bundesliga. A report from ESPN last year compared the 6ft4 midfielder to former Bayern Munich star Sami Khedira and Germany legend Stefan Effenberg,
