People in Liverpool could be paying more for their water now that the supplier United Utilities will be able to raise prices for customers after having met its targets.
Eleven water companies across England and Wales have been fined a combined total of £150 million due to missing targets set by the regulatory body, Ofwat.
However, United Utilities were among the highest performing companies and have been given the green light to charge customers more.

In comparison, the worst performing supplies, Thames Water and Southern Water, will be forced to reimburse customers £51m and £28.3m respectively.
According to the Ofwat report, United Utilities were the second best performing water supplier behind Severn Trent Water. The local water supplier performed well on issues such as internal sewer flooding, pollution incidents, and supply interruptions.
As a result of their high-achievements, United Utilities will be permitted to generate an additional £24.1 million in customer bills.
The yearly targets, called performance commitments, are a combination of shared targets across the sector and bespoke individual targets on a wide range of issues. They were set in 2019 at the last price review and are put in place up until the next review in 2025.
David Black, the chief executive officer of Ofwat for England and Wales, said: “When it comes to delivering for their customers, too many water companies are falling short, and we are requiring them to return around £150m to their customers.
“We expect companies to improve their performance every year; where they fail to do so, we will hold them to account. The poorest performers, Southern Water and Thames Water, will have to return almost £80m to their customers. All water companies need to earn back the trust of customers and the public and we will continue to challenge the sector to improve.”
