Liverpool’s quadruple hopes ended by Plymouth in stunning FA Cup upset

Liverpool’s hopes of a historic quadruple were stunningly ended by Plymouth Argyle in a monumental FA Cup upset.

Ryan Hardie’s penalty, after Harvey Elliott handled, was enough to clinch a famous win for the Championship strugglers.

After making nine changes, days after advancing to the Carabao Cup final, Arne Slot’s side have exited the FA Cup in just their fourth overall defeat of an excellent season.

As the Reds piled on the pressure over nine minutes of stoppage time, goalkeeper Conor Hazard stepped up to save his side.

First to deny Diogo Jota’s spectacular, spinning volley, that was heading towards the top left corner, and then to deny Darwin Nunez’s close-range header.

Home Park then erupted at full time just seconds later after one of the greatest upsets in FA Cup history was confirmed.

Ryan Hardie said after the upset: "Kick the ball in the net and it's one-nil, there's a lot of pressure, I had a lot of practice, it's picking your side and committing to it.

While Callum Wright, born in Merseyside and a Liverpool fan, added: “I was starting to get nervous, but we kept the lead, it’s insane, a dream come true to play them and beat them, I’ll remember it forever.”
