Liverpool's next moves as forward exits expected following Luis Diaz transfer

Liverpool are closing in on the major signing of Luis Diaz from Porto for £50m in a move that could shake things up at Anfield.

Tottenham have been heavily linked with the Colombian and were close to striking a deal.

However, Jorge Mendes' presence reportedly hampered proceedings, which has allowed the Reds to steal a march.

Liverpool have been quiet in recent transfer windows with Ibrahima Konate their only major signing of the past 12 months.

The arrival of Diaz though is a major coup and a further reflection on their impressive mid-season work, following previous January moves for the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Philippe Coutinho.

Jurgen Klopp had been coy on any new arrivals this month but Diaz could provide a much needed spark for the Reds, having managed to cut the gap to Manchester City at the weekend.

The final few days of the transfer market can often be a frantic period.

A new face on Merseyside could free up Liverpool to make some tweaks to their squad, thus giving certain individuals chance to consider their options.

Possible exits

The Reds have a host of attacking weapons available to them, but when the starting XI comes out it is generally four into three.

Diogo Jota has slowly forcing his way into what was once a fearsome attacking trio, that looked set to cause havoc for seasons to come.

Now it is generally a case of Jota or Roberto Firmino with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane occupying the two wide roles.

That has left the likes of Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino struggling for minutes at Anfield.

Klopp has accommodated the pair where he can, but in big games they are rarely his go to, more often than not providing options from the bench.

Minamino has been unable to settle since signing from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020, but the Reds have turned down offers for him this month.

Diaz's arrival could free up the Japanese star to leave with Origi no doubt considering his own future.

For several summers the Belgian has been linked with the exit door with nothing ever materialising.

There may also be a greater willingness to allow a young player, like a Kaide Gordon, to head out on loan with Klopp now having a further option in attack, which remains key as the Reds fight for silverware on four fronts.

A front three transition

The move for Diaz does pose as many questions as it does answers.

For starters, the Colombian's best work has come as a winger with many of his stats pointing to him succeeding in a Klopp team.

Those two positions have been largely set in stone - but that could now be challenged.

Mane has not been the player he was for the past year or so, despite a slight resurgence this year compared to his 2020/21 campaign.

Diaz is four years Mane's junior so eventually a transition may have to take place.

A second theory, and the one Kop followers don't want to entertain, is that Liverpool are preparing for the possibility of Salah leaving.

The Egyptian's contract saga continues to rumble on and he will enter the final 12 months of his deal this summer, as will Mane and Firmino.

A major offer could tempt the Reds if they are not, privately, confident that Salah will eventually sign.

A £50m investment in a squad player has not been part of Liverpool's transfer strategy, so such an investment in Diaz must surely mean something has to give.
