Liverpool's Luis Diaz genius hijack forces Chelsea to jump at £36m Real Madrid transfer gamble

Liverpool's decision to hijack Spurs' move for Porto forward Luis Diaz has sent a signal of intent from Merseyside.

It is a bold and proactive move from Liverpool to acquire one of Europe's in-form attackers and a show of action in the face of concern over the contract of Mohamed Salah.

Although Salah's ridiculous output since joining in 2017 would make his departure a massive blow, Liverpool are not just sitting still and waiting for things to happen.

Like Jota has proven since joining in 2020, there will be a plan to integrate Diaz into Klopp's attacking system with hopes he can become prolific.

A reported £37m deal for the Colombian should not only worry Chelsea but provide an example of the value in moving proactively in the market.

Liverpool wasn't going to wait for the problem to arise before being tasked with solving it. This transfer will now likely make their summer plan a little easier, shifting attention onto other areas Klopp feels need strengthening heading into the 2022/23 campaign.

How is this relates to Chelsea is the long-standing interest in Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

Tchouameni has clearly been a target of Chelsea for some time now, with Petr Cech meeting with the player and his representatives over a potential transfer last July.

A deal never materialised in 2021, with reports that Thomas Tuchel believed the midfielder needed another year of Ligue 1 football to mature into a player ready for Premier League football.

But Chelsea deciding to wait has only attracted more admirers to Tchouameni, with the likes of Manchester United, Juventus and other top European clubs monitoring his rapid progress.

On Thursday evening, reports came from Spanish publication Marca that Real Madrid's chief scout, Juni Calafat, has held discussions with the Tchouameni's representatives over a potential move in the next transfer window.

Even if Marca claims Los Blancos may have had previous contact with the player, football.london understands no club has spent longer pursuing Tchouameni than Chelsea.

Currently valued at £36m on TransferMarkt, he will now likely be worth a lot more over the summer, when Chelsea will look to win a race they have been ahead in for some time.

Not only has Chelsea's wait to make this deal meant more time for other clubs to register their interest, but it also now means Marina Granovskaia will be negotiating at a larger fee with Monaco knowing the value of the player.

Chelsea also enter next summer knowing that two of their senior central midfielders, Jorginho and N'Golo Kante, will be entering the final year of their deals, effectively meaning the last chance to attract a larger fee for them.

Signing Tchouameni last year over the deadline day loan for Saul might have seemed a bigger jump up for a young player into a foreign league, but it would have given Chelsea the insurance of a succession plan.

Tchouameni also would have got substantial minutes given the injuries to Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. And his presence would have also given Tuchel a profile of midfielder Chelsea have been lacking for some time.

Chelsea cannot wait any longer for Tchouameni. 2022 will be the year we find out how seriously the club is looking to revamp an ageing midfield.
