One of Liverpool’s most popular toy shops could be making a return to the high street following a recent deal with WH Smith.
A visit to Toys R Us was an absolute treat for children, with many Liverpool families taking a trip to the store to buy birthday and Christmas presents for their kids. The brand arrived in the UK in 1985 and quickly spread across the UK.
Toys R Us catered for children of all ages, selling everything they could possibly want or need. Many will recall buying the latest Barbie doll or Lego set, while others will remember the extensive outdoor selection, with some buying their first bike from the store.

Of course, there’s no Toys R Us without its iconic mascot - Geoffrey the Giraffe - who has been associated with the brand since the 1950s. While people have still been able to shop the brand online, it certainly isn’t the same as spending hours exploring the huge stores.
In Merseyside, there were various Toys R Us branches, including a shop in Liverpool ONE and another on Paisley Street. All stores closed in 2018, but the brand’s new deal with WH Smith could see 40 UK stores reopen, although the exact locations aren’t yet known.
The ECHO recently posted the news of Toys R Us potentially returning to the city in our Facebook Page. Many people got in touch to share their views of its possible return. Gemma commented: “I hope so.” Amanda said: “Used to like Toys R Us when I was younger.”
Franky wrote: “You knew it was Christmas when the Toys R Us advert came on.” Jo commented: “Bring back Woolworth's as well for Christmas please, that would be even better.”
Some people reminisced about what they bought at Toys R Us. Lynsey wrote: “I got my first pair of roller boots from there.” Luke added: “First Lego set.”
Others, however, don’t seem too impressed with the news. Rob wrote: “Toys R Us was too expensive.” Gary added: “Was always way overpriced. Rather have Woolies back.”
