Liverpool midfielder Fabinho has revealed that he felt ‘anger’ following his side’s last-gasp winner after accusing Newcastle United of timewasting.
Roberto Firmino had cancelled out Newcastle debutant Alexander Isak’s debut goal as the sides went into five minutes of stoppage time at one goal apiece. A number of Newcastle players went down with cramp, while goalkeeper Nick Pope also went down with an injury.
This led Andre Mariner to add a further three minutes to the original five minutes of additional time, during which Fabio Carvalho scored the winning goal for Liverpool.
Fabinho, in an honest admission, has recalled feeling ‘anger’ after Carvalho’s strike and insisted that Liverpool deserved the three points on the night.
"We expect when teams come to play at Anfield to slow the game and take time at every set-piece and every throw-in," Fabinho said as reported by the Liverpool ECHO. "It annoys you a little bit.
“But we keep trying and pushing. Sometimes we were a little bit impatient with the ball, the fans were a little bit impatient as well, but we kept trying and pushing. I don't know if we played really good football but in the end we tried to put the ball into the box and score a goal, and we scored in that way.
"I had so many emotions when Fabio scored the second goal. Passion. relief, anger though because they were taking time - I think that's normal because a draw was a good result for them - but at the end we deserved to score. We pushed until the end and it was a really important three points."
