Liverpool restaurant Hawksmoor educating New York on 'wtf Sunday roast is all about'

A restaurant group with a venue in Liverpool, is set to take the beloved - and quintessentially British - Sunday roast to New York city, educating them on “wtf” it’s all about.

Hawksmoor, which opened a restaurant in the city in November 2022, is known and loved for its charcoal grilled, 35-day dry aged steaks and its award-winning cocktails. Its venues boast impressive and stylish interiors, offering diners a luxurious sanctuary where they can tuck into decadent dishes. Founded in 2006 by childhood friends, Will Beckett and Huw Gott, Hawksmoor has continued to flourish.

Originally based in a relatively unfashionable part of London, it's since grown to a 10 restaurant group, with venues in Manchester, Edinburgh and New York. Its Liverpool site can be found at the stunning Grade II listed India Buildings, based just off Castle Street in the thriving city centre.

Now, the restaurant chain is set to introduce its stateside diners to the iconic roast dinner. A Sunday roast is a weekly tradition for many people, especially during these cold and dreary winter months.

The popular dish traditionally comprises roast potatoes, roast meat, vegetables and Yorkshire pudding, all doused in gravy. It often includes stuffing and condiments such as apple sauce, mint sauce or redcurrant sauce, depending on the meat served.

Hawksmoor's recent launch in the Big Apple was a roaring success, garnering praise in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and critics across New York City's renowned restaurant scene, with the team determined to dazzle further with the Sunday roast.

Taking to popular social media platform Twitter, Hawksmoor revealed: "Over the next few Sundays we're launching Sunday Roasts in Manhattan at @HawksmoorNYC (soft launching today/next week), which also involves telling them wtf [what the f***] Sunday roast beef is all about. What do they need to know?"

The tweet was met with a flurry of responses from people keen to impart their Sunday roast wisdom. One Twitter user advised: "No such thing as too much gravy."

Another quipped: "Yorkshire Pudding is food of the gods and what they have mistakenly renamed 'popovers'." A third commented: "Yorkshire pudding with tasty gravy and the crispy and fluffy roast spud… oh and horseradish cream. Thing is, roasts are all about everything else surrounding the beef otherwise you might as well have a steak. Enjoy!"

Twitter user Richard said: "Gravy. Proper thick stuff. Not "jus"." Pete said: "At last! A decent Sunday roast in NY! In all of the years I've been visiting there, I've never been able to find one! Let me book a ticket and I'll see you there!" Lucy said: "Explain Yorkshires." And Lesley simply added: "Wow, Wow, Wow, Wow, Wow!"

Hawksmoor Liverpool can be found at 8 Brunswick Street, Liverpool, L2 0PL.
