Liverpool 'reject' Celtic approach for Kelleher as Rodgers identifies top target

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has emerged as a top transfer target for Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.

The Parkhead boss is reportedly interested in the Republic of Ireland keeper with a view to becoming successor to Joe Hart as No1.

And it's claimed Kelleher, 24, was hopeful of an exit from Anfield over the summer.

The Scottish Sun reports Celtic approached Liverpool chiefs over Kelleher's availability however, they were informed he would not be leaving the club.

Instead, Kelleher remained at Anfield due to Saudi clubs' reported interest in No1 Alisson.

It's claimed Liverpool would need to replace Kelleher with another home-grown player making a move tricky.

But, it's thought Kelleher would be keen on a move to Celtic with the opportunity to become No1 after playing back-up at Liverpool.

Rodgers previously admitted Hart could remain at Celtic past this season despite reports Celtic are actively searching for his long-term replacement.

He said: “Yeah. You always assess it, because again, there is family matters there too. His family are down south and he is up here, so there are other considerations other than the football.

“But what I do know from speaking to him is that I see the joy that he has had here, and I see the feeling and the respect he has gained from the people here, so that is very important for him.

“He’s a great ambassador for the club. He has time for the supporters, and that is always important at a club like Celtic, because without the supporters the club is nothing.

“So, you have to show that respect, and he does that, he engages with supporters.

“He is great with his teammates, and his leadership qualities – his behaviour, the way he behaves in the correct way – it is as you would expect from a top professional.”
