Liverpool record holder training with Championship club after summer exit

A Liverpool record holder is reportedly training with a new club after being released by the Reds.

Earlier this month, Liverpool confirmed their retained list and the players who would be departing when their contracts end. One of those players was Ben Woodburn.

After spending last season on loan with Scottish Premiership outfit Hearts, Woodburn will officially leave Liverpool when his contract runs out at the end of this month.

Now, according to the Mail Online, Woodburn is already training with a new club as he prepares to be a free agent. It has been claimed that the Wales international is training at Preston North End, having agreed a two-week trial with the Championship club.

After initially returning to Liverpool, it was thought that Hearts were considering offering Woodburn a contract when his time at Anfield comes to an end. While his versatility was underlined by starring as centre-forward, on both wings and in two midfield roles, starts were more difficult to come by in the closing months and he was an unused substitute in the Scottish Cup final defeat to Rangers.

Woodburn remains a record holder at Liverpool, which he holds for being the club’s youngest ever goalscorer. He netted in the League Cup quarter-final win over Leeds United in 2016 at the age of 17 years and 45 days.

The 22-year-old has since had loan spells at Sheffield United, Oxford United and Blackpool. His last outing for Liverpool came as a late substitute in May 2018 in a 4-0 win over Brighton in the Premier League.
