Liverpool record fans love could be broken as Man City name squad for Champions League final

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson could be about to win the Champions League for the second time in his career after being included in Manchester City’s travelling squad for Saturday’s final with Inter Milan.

The former England international, who was on the bench for the Reds’ famous victory over AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005, will return to the Turkish capital and the Ataturk Stadium as City look to win the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Carson has only ever made two Champions League appearances, having memorably started for Liverpool in their 2-1 quarter-final victory over Juventus in April 2005, before coming on as a substitute for City in last year’s round-of-16 clash against Sporting Lisbon. But despite being Pep Guardiola’s third-choice goalkeeper, he is set to be named on the bench for Saturday’s final after being included in the Spaniard’s 23-man squad.

To the ongoing amusement of Reds and non-City fans, Carson is actually the only player in the City squad to have ever previously won the Champions League courtesy of Liverpool’s 2005 triumph.

Should City beat Inter Milan, not only will that piece of footballing trivia no longer be true, but Guardiola’s men will have also completed the treble having won the Premier League and FA Cup already this season.

With Liverpool missing out on Champions League qualification this season, UEFA’s revamp of the competition from 2024/25 onwards means it would actually be in the Reds’ interests for City and England’s other entrants to do well in Europe’s elite tournament next year.

Under new rules set to come into play next year, the two nations that perform best overall will be granted an additional qualifying berth for the following season’s edition, with the Premier League potentially free to enter five teams as a result if their sides continue to dominate in Europe.
