A Liverpool pub is set to host the city’s first-ever “Pub Pride”.
Peter Kavanaghs, on Egerton Street, has teamed up with Everton FC’s LGBTQ+ supporters group, Rainbow Toffees to host the event later on in Pride Month.
Ask For Clive, the LGBTQ+ equivalent to Ask For Angela, held the first Pub Pride nationally in 2021. The initiative worked alongside Pride organisations, pub companies, BID teams and local councils to bring the event to life. Now returning for its third year, Liverpool has decided to join in on the celebrations.

Rainbow Toffees’ Paul Hession told the ECHO: “I think it’s a really big step in the right direction. Bringing inclusion into the wider community outside of the city centre. It’s a really important initiative and I’m honoured to be part of it. We - the LGBTQ+ community - shouldn’t just be restricted to one area. It’s a lovely idea for us to be able to be ourselves wherever we go including outside the Pride Quarter.”
The night acts as a chance for venues to embrace their local LGBTQ+ community and show their support. For Peter Kavanaghs, they will treat guests on Saturday, June 17, to musical performances from solo vocalist Tony Blaney as they want “everyone to be accepted for who they are”.
Paul said: “I instantly knew Peter Kavanaghs would be the perfect local pub to host this. This will be the first-ever one in Liverpool and it just goes to show how far we have come. The momentum is already gathering, we had over 100 likes on our poster and lots of people commenting. Loads have shown interest in attending too.”
Each year, the event sees a new theme colour, picked from the progress Pride flag, being adopted as its primary colour. For 2023 Violet / Purple has been chosen - which on the original Pride Flag symbolises spirituality.
Ask for Clive is a charity that partners with venues to promote inclusion and create welcoming environments for the LGBTQ+ community. They work directly with local communities and venues and collaborate with law enforcement on training and reporting initiatives.
Similar to Ask for Angela, the venue is trained to deal with situations - in this case, in the event of any form of discrimination or hate crime. Venues put the Ask for Clive sticker on their door to let customers know "everyone is welcome here" and hate won't be tolerated.
