Jurgen Klopp has some big decisions to make ahead of the clash with Tottenham.
The Reds are in desperate need of a win after back-to-back defeats against Nottingham Forest and Leeds. They are currently 10 points behind Spurs in the table and another defeat will leave their top-four hopes in tatters. But what system will Klopp go for?
The Liverpool boss has been experimenting with new formations this season. He’s been trying to solve the Reds’ inconsistency but also trying to figure out how to get the best out of Darwin Nunez.
That has seen Klopp turn to a 4-2-3-1 as well as a diamond midfield of 4-1-2-1-2 but now he is expected to return to his favoured 4-3-3. That’s because Liverpool ended Napoli’s unbeaten start to the season in midweek playing in Klopp’s go-to formation.
But there are still team decisions to be made. Ibrahima Konate is fit again and expected to start alongside Virgil van Dijk in defence.
Jordan Henderson missed the Napoli game with a minor issue but should be fit to face Spurs in London. He’s expected to be in midfield alongside the under-performing Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara.
Up front, Klopp may push Darwin Nunez out onto the left to get Roberto Firmino into a central role again. Nunez came off the bench against Napoli and was involved in both goals so is sure to start this one as the Reds need a win.
Mo Salah will start in his usual right-hand side position after revealing in midweek that is his favoured role. He said: “Yeah [on being more comfortable] I am happy about it, I have played that position for five or six years and I have to say yes that position is best for me.
“But the manager decides the tactics and as a player you have to follow the leader.” The Egyptian had been tried in a more central role in recent weeks.
