Liverpool possible Champions League opponents and final pots confirmed as draw time nears

Liverpool now know all their potential opponents for the Champions League group stage – and will hope to avoid a nightmare scenario.

The draw for the 32-team first phase takes place in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Thursday at 5pm UK time, with the participants split into four seeding pots.

Jurgen Klopp's side have long known they are seeded in Pot 2 as one of 26 teams who automatically qualified for the group stage.

The remaining six places were decided via the play-offs through one of two routes – four from the Champions Path, which contains only league winners not to have been given a direct berth to the group stage, and two from the League Path, which is for clubs who finished in lower positions in their respective leagues.

Benfica, Maccabi Haifa and Viktoria Plzen were joined on Wednesday by Rangers, FC Copenhagen and Dinamo Zagreb.

The top seeds in Pot 1 consist of Champions League winners Real Madrid, Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt and the champions of the six leading European leagues.

The remaining 24 teams are split into three pots based on their UEFA club coefficient, which is determined by the performance of each club in European competition over the previous five years.

Having won the Champions League, reached two other finals and the quarter-final during that time, Liverpool are in Pot 2 among the highest-ranked clubs.

They cannot be drawn with Premier League rivals Manchester City from Pot 1, and will avoid the other teams in Pot 2. The Reds can face any of the teams from Pot 3 and Pot 4.

Arguably the toughest draw would see Liverpool paired with either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich from Pot 1, while also taking on Inter Milan from Pot 3 and Celtic in Pot 4. Less difficult, at least by comparison, would involve the Reds drawn with Ajax from Pot 1, Salzburg from Pot 3 and Viktoria Plzen in Pot 4.

With the season interrupted by the World Cup in November, the Champions League group games are played over a period of nine weeks, beginning on September 6/7 and being completed on November 1/2.

Champions League draw seedings

Pot 1: Real Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt, Manchester City, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Porto, Ajax.

Pot 2: Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, RB Leipzig, Tottenham Hotspur.

Pot 3: Borussia Dortmund, Red Bull Salzburg, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan, Napoli, Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, Bayer Leverkusen.

Pot 4: Marseille, Club Bruges, Celtic, Viktoria Plzen, Maccabi Haifi, Rangers, FC Copenhagen and Dinamo Zagreb.
