Liverpool pocket seven-figure windfall after Nottingham Forest transfer confirmed

Liverpool are set to receive a £1.5million windfall after Nottingham Forest confirmed the signing of Taiwo Awoniyi from Union Berlin.

The 24-year-old forward moved to the Merseyside club as a teenager back in 2015 but was immediately loaned out to FSV Frankfurt as the Reds struggled to secure a work permit for their new player. A succession of further loan spells followed before he eventually left Anfield for Union Berlin on a permanent basis last summer - following a year on loan in the German capital - having never kicked a ball in the red shirt of Liverpool.

But Awoniyi's career really took off last season, scoring 15 Bundesliga goals in 31 league appearances. And after just 12 months on a permanent contract in Berlin, the Nigerian is on his way back to England after signing for Nottingham Forest on their return to the Premier League.

Steve Cooper's side have broken the club's transfer record to capture Awoniyi in a reported £17million deal and that's good news for Liverpool who included a 10% sell-on clause in his sale to Union Berlin 12 months ago - a deal that in it's own right was worth £6.5million to the Reds.

As reported by the ECHO yesterday, it had been expected that the Reds would receive £1.75m due to their 10% sell-on clause. However, club insiders have revealed Liverpool will actually receive roughly £1.5m from the German side instead, offering an insight into the finer details of Awoniyi’s move from Anfield and return to the Premier League.

Having originally bought the promising young player for £400,000 in 2015 a net transfer profit of £7.6million offers up another example of the solid business Liverpool have been able to do for a player that wasn't even able to make a single first team appearance before moving on.
