Liverpool player ratings as Virgil van Dijk and three other stars awful against Manchester United

Alisson Becker 6

Left totally exposed for the opener and decent stop to turn behind Eriksen free-kick. Saves second half spared a bigger beating.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 4

Allowed Elanga to get on top of him too easily having earlier been spooked by Rashford. Not great. Booked.

Joe Gomez 6

Back in the starting line-up, showed consistent composure as too many flapped around him. Good block from Rashford first half.

YOUR SHOUT: Rate the Liverpool players after defeat to Manchester United

AS IT HAPPENED: Manchester United vs Liverpool reaction and analysis

Virgil van Dijk 4

Very poor for United’s opener and rightly earned an x-rated rebuke from Milner. Better when dealing with Rashford before break but all over the place at times second half.

Andy Robertson 6

Created some issues with his overlaps going forward and defensively solid enough. Wasn’t able to get into game sufficiently after break, though. Subbed.

Jordan Henderson 4

Caught out of position far too often in opening 20 minutes. Improved a little but then gave ball away for killer second goal. Subbed.

Harvey Elliott 6

Didn’t offer sufficient defensive protection in the early stages but good, quick passing caused United defence problems. Began to find more holes second half.

James Milner 5

Tried to get Liverpool on front foot but sat down by Sancho for opener and sailed close to the wind with some challenges. Tired later on and subbed.

Mohamed Salah 6

Barely in the game first half, but when found he instantly caused panic in the United defence. One shot blocked. Same story after break, but wasn’t deterred and headed in to give Liverpool hope.

Roberto Firmino 4

Had he played any deeper first half the Brazilian would have been sat in the away end. Slightly more effective after interval, but not by much.

Luis Diaz 6

In a real battle with Dalot but the one forward who showed real thrust and purpose. Denied by De Gea from close range.

Fabinho (for Henderson 59) 6

Steadied the midfield a tad and header saved by De Gea.

Fabio Carvalho (for Milner 73) 6

Looked bright and his parried shot gave Salah the chance to score.

Kostas Tsimikas (for Robertson 86)

Minutes.
