Liverpool player ratings as Thiago sublime and six others brilliant against Villarreal

Alisson Becker 6

Another match where the Brazilian’s main concern was keeping warm.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 7

An outlet going forward with Villarreal sitting deep, his crossing prompted some scrambled defending. Subbed.

Ibrahima Konate 7

Didn’t connect properly with one early header from corner but some strong defensive moments appreciated by the Kop.

Virgil van Dijk 7

Not much to do defensively before break but good challenge on Danjuma second half. Booked.

Andy Robertson 8

One ambitious effort deflected behind first half and roused the crowd by often being first to loose balls. Almost played as a left-winger, the Scot was that advanced.

Fabinho 8

Regularly the base of Liverpool’s attacks and used possession intelligently. Constant pressing penned Villarreal into their own final third.

Thiago Alcantara 9

Kept Liverpool ticking over with swift passing and regularly switched play, and hit the post with 30-yard effort. Got stuck in and passing sublime as ever.

Jordan Henderson 8

Snapped into challenges and led the home team’s strong pressing before break, and his cross was deflected in for the all-important opener. Subbed.

Mohamed Salah 8

Close on several occasions before break when shooting too high and didn’t allow left-back Estupinan a moment’s peace, leading to brilliant pass for Mane’s goal.

Sadio Mane 8

Continually pestered the Villarreal backline. Got first-half header all wrong from good Salah cross, but finished well when fed by same player for second. Impressive work. Subbed.

Luis Diaz 8

Twice warmed the palms of Rulli first half and direct running was often too much for Foyth and continued to threaten in another excellent showing. Subbed.

Naby Keita (for Henderson 72) 7

Pressed very well from the moment he was introduced.

Diogo Jota (for Mane 73) 6

Ran about a bit.

Joe Gomez (for Alexander-Arnold 81)

Welcome minutes.

Divock Origi (for Diaz 81)

Big cheers for the derby hero.
