Liverpool player ratings as Joel Matip and Mohamed Salah excellent vs Leeds

Alisson Becker 7

Got away with it when caught dallying by James in opening exchanges. Safe hands when Leeds went on attack second half.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 7

Given the occasional defensive test by Leeds’ willingness to attack but such a threat when going in the other direction.

Joel Matip 8

Defensively solid – including bailing out Alisson – but this was all about the brilliant run and finish for Liverpool’s second.

Virgil van Dijk 7

Rendered Rodrigo peripheral before break and helped the offside trap do its job. Not afraid to belt clear when required - or head it in for the sixth as he did with the last touch of the match.

Andy Robertson 7

Cross from left forced the handball for the first penalty and fired one effort at Meslier. Busier going backwards second half as Raphinha kept him honest. Assist for last goal.

Fabinho 7

A little sloppy at the start but gradually got to grips with the midfield skirmishes he then dominated. Missed a first-half sitter, though.

Thiago Alcantara 8

Used the ball so well and prompted a succession of attacks as Liverpool took control. Got stuck into the midfield battle, too. Subbed.

Curtis Jones 7

Alarmingly unsure early on but Liverpool going ahead offered a huge boost of confidence and began to improve markedly. Began to find spaces in Leeds area with runs from deep. Subbed.

Mohamed Salah 8

Tucked away both penalties nervelessly, provided an assist for Matip and could have had first-half hat-trick but for Firpo clearance off line.

Sadio Mane 7

Looked out of sorts during the opening quarter but got better and raced in behind to win second penalty. Second-half endeavour was rewarded with the fourth and fifth goals.

Luis Diaz 8

Tested Meslier after leaving Ayling flailing and tormented the Leeds defence with his pressing and running. Another fine showing. Subbed.

Jordan Henderson (for Thiago 68) 7

Immediately got stuck in and major contribution to fourth goal.

James Milner (for Jones 77)

Minutes against his boyhood team.

Divock Origi (for Mane 84)

Enough time to help force the fifth goal.
