Liverpool player ratings as Harvey Elliott steals show and Kostas Tsimikas gets what he deserves v Cardiff

Caoimhin Kelleher 6

Clutched a near-post cross early on and confident with ball at his feet. Escaped with a yellow after bringing down Mark Harris miles out of his area shortly after interval.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 7

Inconsistent set-piece delivery while often effectively playing on the right flank, but whipped in fine free-kick for the opener.

Ibrahima Konate 6

Survived an ambitious penalty shout after tangling with Cardiff forward Harris and not always accurate in possession. Better after break, though.

Virgil van Dijk 6

Looked a little short of pace early on and frustrated at times with the slowness of Liverpool’s overall play. Solid second half.

Kostas Tsimikas 8

Regularly got down the left and delivered some teasing crosses, and defended doggedly. Very good outing that earned ovation when subbed.

Jordan Henderson 6

Kept matters reasonably simple in the defensive midfield role but struggled to inject tempo until Liverpool collectively raised their game after interval. Subbed.

Naby Keita 6

Created chance for Diogo Jota and contributed some probing passes, but less said about his shooting the better. Subbed.

Curtis Jones 6

Looked to move Liverpool forward and linked well with Tsimikas. Horribly over with one first-half opening, though. Subbed.

*Rate the Liverpool players for the win over Cardiff City:

Takumi Minamino 6

Struggled to make an impact during the first half on the right but at least more involved when pushing central, from where he scored with last action before being subbed.

Roberto Firmino 6

Won one free-kick in dangerous position but far too peripheral before break. Moved into midfield temporarily second half and after that began to enjoy himself, although not when giving the ball away for Cardiff consolation.

Diogo Jota 7

Neat turn brought good save from Cardiff goalkeeper Dillon Phillips early on, worked hard and opened the scoring with a trademark header.

SUBS

Harvey Elliott (for Keita 58) 8

Bright and eager after so long out and took his goal – a first for Liverpool – brilliantly for the third.

Luis Diaz (for Jones 58) 7

Lively debut as quick feet helped create second goal and then accidentally clobbered on the knee by Cardiff defender Aden Flint.

James Milner (for Minamino 69) 6

Arrival ended the experiment of Firmino in midfield.

Andy Robertson (for Tsimikas 70) 7

Energetic cameo and swept in a good cross for the third goal.

Thiago Alcantara (for Henderson 78)

Welcome return to action for the Spaniard.
