Liverpool player ratings as Alisson excellent but too many average against Real Madrid

Alisson Becker 9

Denied Vinicius brilliantly from close range early on and fingertip diverted Camavinga shot on to crossbar.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 6

Another testing evening up against Vinicius, although great block denied winger second half. Relentlessly probed with passing that was always positive in intent.

Ibrahima Konate 8

Covered Alexander-Arnold whenever he could and wasn’t fazed by physical threat of Benzema. Impressive showing of pace and reading the game.

Virgil van Dijk 6

Regularly looked to play the diagonal for Salah while Real looked to keep the ball away from him. Some good interventions second half.

Andy Robertson 7

Raided with greater regularity first half and provided some bite in the defensive effort. Became virtual left-winger at times after break. Subbed.

Fabinho 6

Sought to keep matters simple in midfield but too often slow in his thought process while his passing wasn’t always on point.

James Milner 6

Popped up in a variety of positions before break and wasn’t afraid of putting the boot in throughout. Subbed.

Mohamed Salah 6

Always looked a threat when in possession and created first-half chance for Nunez. Should have done better to release same player after break, however, and became a target for the Real defence.

Cody Gakpo 6

Saw one piledriver saved by Courtois but otherwise too peripheral in number 10 role. Moved to left wing second half. Subbed.

Darwin Nunez 7

Forced two good saves from Courtois first half and a danger whenever given a chance to run at Carvajal. Lively showing. Subbed.

Diogo Jota 5

Mishit a Salah cross and while there was the usual endeavour he was otherwise barely involved. Subbed.

Roberto Firmino (for Jota 57) 6

Tackle on Vinicius the highlight.

Harvey Elliott (for Nunez 57) 6

Brought energy and spark.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (for Milner 73) 6

Rare outing.

Kostas Tsimikas (for Robertson 90+1)

Enough time to be booked.

Fabio Carvalho (for Gakpo 90+1)

Also appeared.
