Liverpool path to Champions League glory may have taken unexpected twist

Liverpool will enter their UEFA Champions League second-leg tie against Benfica with a 3-1 lead, putting them in a healthy position to progress to the semi-finals.

Goals from Ibrahim Konate, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz gave Jurgen Klopp's side the win in Portugal and avoiding defeat at Anfield next week will set up a tie against Spanish side Villarreal or German giants Bayern Munich - who played out a 1-0 win for the Yellow Submarines on Spanish turf.

Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery masterminded the victory thanks to Arnaut Danjuma's first-half strike. Emery will be disappointed his side didn't win by more given the chances they spurned and take a bigger advantage to Germany next week, where Bayern will have the chance to turn things around at the Allianz Arena.

But it was arguably an unexpected result - and not the only one of those to happen this evening.

Elsewhere, potential final opponents and Premier League rivals Chelsea lost at home to Chelsea 3-1. Karim Benzema struck twice before the break and Kai Havertz pulled a goal back just before half-time to give the west London-outfit a chance to turn things around in the second leg. However, Benzema completed his hat-trick after the break to secure Madrid's two-goal lead.

On the night Jurgen Klopp's side took one step closer to the final, Man City did the same after a hard-fought 1-0 win against Atletico Madrid. Kevin de Bruyne scored the only goal of the game in which the home side dominated from start to finish. Pep Guardiola welcomes Liverpool to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in the Premier League.
