Liverpool outline Mason Mount transfer plan as Todd Boehly makes major Chelsea contract decision

Liverpool remain interested in Chelsea star Mason Mount after contract extension talks were halted with the Blues due to wage demands. The England international sees his current deal expire in 2024 and talks regarding fresh terms were discussed before the World Cup began in November but no significant progress was made.

Like Chelsea, Jurgen Klopp needs to inject fresh life into the Liverpool midfield and after becoming aware of the slow to no progress being made to secure Mounts future, the Reds began keeping tabs on the attacking midfielder and thus any developments in his contract saga.

Despite featuring as a first-team player, due to new arrivals and big-money contracts being agreed for several of his team-mates, Mount is one of the lowest earners at the club, earning a weekly wage of £80,000 (according to Spotrac) which prior to the Blues' January business, places him as the sixth lowest earner at the club.

In recent years offering bumper contracts to players who have ultimately turned out to be failures has cost Chelsea, and the latest incentive from Todd Boehly's new ownership regime is to attempt to bring down the overall wage costs at the club. Hence why, despite costing £88million, Mykhailo Mudryk is only on a reported £97,000-per-week.

This is perhaps where the disagreements lie as Mount, understandably after seeing Reece James and Ben Chilwell sign lucrative deals, would have likely requested a rise in his weekly wages, but Chelsea are perhaps not as keen to agree to those terms as they once were.

Extension talks stalling alerted Liverpool at the time and nearly three months on, despite a slight drop off in his performances, the Reds' interest remains. However, there is one slight different now as The Guardian are reporting that Chelsea are now stepping up their attempts to agree new terms for Mount.

The Evening Standard had reported earlier this week that more January signings were still the priority for the club, but after sealing the transfer on Noni Madueke on Friday, attention appears to have shifted. Agreeing a new deal for Mount is likely at the top of the priority list, given the interest from Liverpool, alongside N'Golo Kante, whose contract is up 2023 and perhaps closely followed by Edouard Mendy who has two-and-a-half-years remaining on his.
