Liverpool news: Steven Gerrard already 'mimicking' Jurgen Klopp as pressure back on Man City

Liverpool dug deep to keep the pressure on Manchester City in the Premier League title race, coming from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 on the road on Tuesday.

Goals from Joel Matip and Sadio Mane either side of half time put the Reds on course for victory at Villa Park, having earlier fell behind to Douglas Luiz's strike.

A win is not enough to put Liverpool back on top of the table - they are level on points with City, although trail the champions on goal difference. Pep Guardiola's side also have a game in hand, which is against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday night.

Mirror Sport has the latest Reds news following that gutsy win away from home.

Liverpool keep pressure on City

After losing ground to City over the weekend following a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, it was always going to be crucial for Liverpool to get back on track on Tuesday.

The early Villa goal made matters even more challenging for the Reds, although after Matip capitalised on some calamitous defending from the home side Klopp's team were in charge for the majority of the contest. In Mane, Liverpool have arguably the form player in the Premier League too and he stepped up again when deployed as the centre-forward to decide the game.

"Liverpool's top goalscorer in their purple patch since February, the Senegal skipper emphatically headed home cute cross from Luis Diaz from the left wing, leaving Martinez with no chance," wrote Nathan Ridley in his six conclusions from the game. Wheeling away in front of the Kopites who'd made the trip to the Midlands, Mane affirmed his status as Klopp's current talisman."

Alisson moment scares Reds

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker had an eventful game on Tuesday, making a number of important stops. However, there was one moment he was fortunate to get away with.

The Brazilian inexplicably passed the ball straight to Ollie Watkins in the first half with the score at 1-1, although luckily for the 'keeper the striker was unable to secure possession and finish into an unguarded net.

After the break, Alisson came to Liverpool's rescue on a couple of occasions, pouncing on a loose touch from Danny Ings when he was through on goal and then parrying away a rasping shot from the forward late on.

Fans suggest Gerrard mimicked Klopp

Although Steven Gerrard will be keen to follow in Klopp's footsteps and become Liverpool manager one day, he was close to literally tailing the German step for step at Villa Park on Tuesday night.

As referee Jon Moss blew up for half time, Klopp turned to the tunnel and started to jog towards the dressing room. Gerrard clearly had the same idea and a number of supporters on social media pointed out the similarities between the pair's actions.

Gerrard would have been content with his players' performance on the night against high-class opposition. However, a lack of ruthlessness and composure in both boxes ultimately saw them come up short.
