Liverpool news: Sadio Mane responds to Luis Diaz challenge as Mohamed Salah heir identified

Sadio Mane says he "knows how good" new Liverpool signing Luis Diaz is after the Colombian's arrival at Anfield has added extra competition for a place in the Reds' first XI.

Liverpool signed Diaz in the final hours of the January transfer deal for an initial fee of £37.5million which could rise to £50m depending on performance-related add-ons.

And Mane has responded to the arrival of the new signing at the club, which happened while he was winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal.

It comes as Jamie Carragher has told his former club they have a "ready-made replacement" to succeed Mohamed Salah in the Reds' attack.

And Liverpool have taken control of their last-16 Champions League tie against Inter Milan.

Here are Mirror Football's latest Liverpool headlines.

Inter talking points

Liverpool earned a smash and grab win over Inter Milan in their Champions League last-16 match at the San Siro on Wednesday night, as goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah handed them a huge advantage for the second leg at Anfield.

Roberto Firmino produced a superb flicked header from Andy Robertson’s in-swinging corner in the 75th minute and eight minutes later Salah’s deflected shot caught Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic flat-footed as it snuck into the net.

While Harvey Elliott and Virgil van Dijk impressed for the Reds, Sadio Mane will be very unhappy about his first-half contribution.

It was a game with plenty of talking points, and Mirror Football has covered them all.

Salah heir identified

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Harvey Elliott could replace Mohamed Salah in the Reds' attack.

Salah has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Anfield, leading to speculation he could leave the club should he not sign a new deal before the end of the season.

The Egyptian forward would certainly leave big shoes to fill if he were to depart, but Carragher believes Elliott could be a 'ready-made replacement'.

The former defender explained exactly what it is about Elliott that excites him, as he compared the 18-year-old to a number of youngsters who have previously made the grade at Liverpool.

Mane responds to Diaz challenge

Sadio Mane says Luis Diaz is a 'great player' who will 'do great for Liverpool', as he opened up about the Colombian winger's arrival at Anfield.

Diaz joined the club in the January transfer window in a deal that could reach £50million.

But the forward's arrival coincided with the Africa Cup of Nations, which Mane won with his international side Senegal.

The Liverpool forward says watched Diaz play for the Reds on TV, and shared his first impressions of the Colombian he's now spent a few days with him after his return to the club.
