Liverpool news: Reds hammer Man Utd as fans show class with Cristiano Ronaldo tribute

Liverpool taught Manchester United a footballing lesson as they hammered their Premier League rivals 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The Reds went into the game knowing they would go top of the Premier League table with a win, with Manchester City set to play Brighton on Wednesday. And they came racing out of the blocks at Anfield to take an early lead through Luis Diaz as Jurgen Klopp's side set a blistering tempo straight from the off.

Two goals from Mohamed Salah and one from Sadio Mane sealed the win to put pressure on the Reds' title rivals. Supporters also showed their class with a touching tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo's son on the seventh minute.

And David de Gea was left very angry at Trent Alexander-Arnold after the opening goal.

De Gea furious with Trent

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea squared up to Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold during their Premier League encounter at Anfield.

The incident happened as Liverpool celebrated opening the scoring in the fifth minute through January signing Luis Diaz. The Colombian swept home after Mohamed Salah squared for him to finish from close range.

In the aftermath Alexander-Arnold kicked the ball into the net in celebration but accidentally hit the United stopper in the face, causing him to show his anger towards the Liverpool full-back.

United talking points

Liverpool went top of the Premier League with a thumping 4-0 win over Manchester United at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Mohamed Salah scored twice while Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane also got on the scoreline to put pressure on Man City ahead of their match with Brighton on Wednesday. Diaz scored the 400th goal under Jurgen Klopp from close range in only the fifth minute before Mohamed Salah doubled the lead shortly after as he hammered home from Sadio Mane's delightful pass.

In the second half Diaz squared for Mane to stroke a left-footed shot past David De Gea before Salah completed the rout when his deflected shot looped over the goalkeeper five minutes from time. It was a match full of talking points, including the sense of deja vu and a passage of play which summed up the seasons of both clubs.

Tribute to Ronaldo's son

Liverpool fans sang 'You'll Never Walk Alone' for Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo after the 37-year-old superstar announced the tragic death of his baby son.

Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez had been expecting twins but both confirmed the hearbreaking news of their son's death during childbirth on social media, where they wrote that their daughter had been delivered safely. Supporters had planned to applaud the United forward in the seventh minute, due to his shirt number, before the game but in an incredibly touching moment they also broke out into a spontaneous chorus of the club's iconic song.
