Liverpool news: Mohamed Salah told to help unearth own replacement as young star leaves

Mohamed Salah has been told he should help develop Liverpool's younger players to ensure the club have a replacement for him when he eventually departs.

The Egyptian forward signed a new contract to keep him at Anfield for another three years this summer, and former Reds striker Stan Collymore says he now wants to see Salah take on a senior role within Jurgen Klopp's squad. That would mean helping younger players to improve and grow – and Collymore thinks Salah could even help develop his eventual replacement.

It comes as Trent Alexandre-Arnold has sent a goodbye message to his "best mate" at Liverpool after the club's youngest ever goalscorer Ben Woodburn departed. And Lionel Messi has been told he would not get into Jurgen Klopp's starting XI.

Here are Mirror Football's latest Liverpool headlines.

Salah told to help find his replacement

Mohamed Salah needs to take on the role of being a senior player at Liverpool by helping to develop Fabio Carvalho, according to Stan Collymore.

Former Reds forward Collymore says Liverpool have "a huge opportunity" to develop their new signing into Salah's eventual replacement after the Egyptian extended his stay at the club by signing a new contract. The ex-Liverpool striker says that "stands a better chance" of getting to Salah's level with his help, although admits it will be incredibly difficult to replace the Reds' superstar forward.

And Collymore wants to see Salah mentor Carvalho to try and help Liverpool's new signing develop his game.

Trent's parting message to "best mate"

Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has said his goodbyes to his "best mate" Ben Woodburn after the forward left the club.

Woodburn became Liverpool's youngest-ever goalscorer back in November 2016 when he scored in a League Cup win over Leeds United. But he never managed to deliver on that early promise and has now left the Anfield outfit to sign for Championship outfit Preston North End.

And after he secured his move, Alexander-Arnold wished Woodburn goodbye on social media by saying: "My brother what a journey," followed by a heart emoji.

Messi sent Liverpool message

Lionel Messi has been told he wouldn't get into Liverpool's starting XI.

The Argentinian will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, to ever play the sport. But after joining Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona last summer, the Argentinian has had a difficult season and failed to hit the heights he is normally used to.

And according to former England international Danny Mills, he's no longer at a level to play for the Reds – or any of the Premier League's top teams.
