Liverpool news: "Late bloomer" Luis Diaz will be made to wait for debut

Jurgen Klopp will not throw Luis Diaz straight into the Liverpool starting XI following his recent arrival.

The Reds captured the signing of the £50m Colombian from Porto, fending off competition from Tottenham in the process.

Diaz will provide competition for Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, both of whom are away at AFCON but due back very soon.

Liverpool are still fighting on all four fronts but have rarely changed their frontline due to a lack of credible alternatives.

Diaz will now provide that, having been touted as among the best players in Portugal over recent seasons.

Jurgen Klopp was thrilled to get his signing over the line having tracked him for some time and admitted the winger, at 25, is late to show his potential.

The German said: "We like pretty much everything about him. I have followed him for a while, he is an exceptional player. He has speed and character.

Have Your Say! Will Luis Diaz eventually replace either Sadio Mane or Mo Salah in the starting XI? Tell us here.

"He maybe is a bit of a late bloomer but I'm really happy we could get him in now. It's a special story so far. He is one of us now."

Liverpool are in FA Cup action this weekend against Cardiff City at Anfield.

Following that they take on Leicester City before travelling to Burnley, which will end a spell of three games inside a week.

The Champions League will also resume shortly but Klopp will resist the urge to include Diaz straight away claiming the Colombian still needs to adapt and hit top gear.

"If we was immediately at his best then it would be really strange," claimed the Reds boss.

"He needs time to adapt to it but that doesn't mean I speak about four or five months, I haven't even seen him yet in training so maybe we should wait a little bit!

"I'm really happy with the signing."

One man Liverpool did miss out on in the January transfer window is Fulham's Fabio Carvalho.

The teenage sensation has caught the attention at Craven Cottage and is out of contract come the summer.

A deal could not be completed on deadline day, although the Reds are expected to renew their interest.

Klopp confirmed Carvalho remained on the club's radar.

"I don't know. We will see. We are obviously still interested, it would be crazy if we are not," he said.

"It's obviously not in our hands. It was late before the deadline and it didn't work out. We will see what happens."

Liverpool previously added Harvey Elliott from Fulham add could return to raid the west London club.
