Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp hits out at Gary Neville as Kylian Mbappe drops transfer hint

It is been a far from ideal first half of the season for Liverpool, who find themselves sitting a lowly eighth in the Premier League.

One of the players who has come in for criticism amid their poor form has been Trent Alexander-Arnold. Gary Neville has recently slammed the right-back, but Klopp has now moved to back the 24-year-old.

Klopp's decision to hit out at Neville comes as the German also delivered an update on his January transfer plans following the news that the Reds are for sale and target Kylian Mbappe dropped a hint on his future. Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Liverpool news.

Klopp hits out at Neville

Manchester United legend Gary Neville recently questioned if Trent Alexander-Arnold could be trusted to play a knockout game for England at the World Cup. That criticism came amid what has been a disappointing campaign so far from the right-back.

But Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has now hit out at Neville and given strong backing to Alexander-Arnold. He lamented the fact that there remained a discussion about the 24-year-old star.

"I heard Gary Neville said something. But he's now 24, he's won quite a few finals; that's big games where he has had to defend. He was always there, defending well. I don't know why we have this discussion," he said.

Klopp has also delivered an update on his plans for the January transfer window. There is some concern that he could be forced to change his scheme following the news that FSG had put the Reds up for sale.

But the German has insisted that nothing has yet been decided for the window, with Liverpool potentially needing to boost their squad this winter. He also made it clear that the Reds were continuing to keep tabs on his targets despite the uncertainty about the club's future.

"We have to see what we do. Nothing is decided, what we will do in the winter. We really have to see, we have time before then and we follow the market all the time, every day. That's how it is," he said.

Mbappe drops hint on future

Kylian Mbappe has long been viewed as being one of Liverpool's leading transfer targets. The Frenchman signed a new contract with Paris Saint-Germain in May, but there have been some reports that he is unhappy with life at the Parc des Princes.

That sparked some hope that Liverpool may be able to mount a move for him in upcoming transfer windows. But it appears that Mbappe has now rubbished the suggestions that he wants to leave PSG.

“For us it’s a big message, because when I announced I stay, a lot of things change in the mentality of people. People start to say, ‘Yeah, we don’t need to go out. You don’t need to leave the country',” he said.
