Liverpool news: Five-man midfield shortlist revealed as Trent Alexander-Arnold responds

Liverpool look likely to spend big in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister is on the verge of becoming the club’s first signing. New sporting director Jorg Schmadtke’s work is not expected to end there though.

The Reds have added a host of midfielders to their shopping list, whilst a few players could leave Anfield before next season gets underway. Take a look at the standout headlines coming out of Anfield over the past 24 hours.

Midfield shortlist revealed

Liverpool are aiming to sign another two midfielders this summer even after they sign Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton.

Talks have reportedly commenced with the representatives of Borussia Monchengladbach star Manu Kone. Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram has been scouted, whilst recently-relegated Southampton star Romeo Lavia has been discussed by the Reds’ hierarchy. Elsewhere, there could also be a few options in Spain.

Sport have suggested that Liverpool are eyeing up a swoop for Barcelona’s Franck Kessie just a year after he arrived at the Camp Nou. Finally, further reports from Spain suggest that the Reds are at the front of the queue for Celta Vigo wonderkid Gabri Veiga.

Lallana confirms Mac Allister strengths

Incoming signing Mac Allister has been described as a "special player and a special person" by Brighton team-mate and former Liverpool star Adam Lallana.

He told The Big Interview with Graham Hunter : "He's a player that is so pure with how he plays. The way he lends the football, uses others, there's no selfishness in the way he plays.

“It was so special watching him during the World Cup, not playing to begin with then getting used and proving himself. Then playing so well that there's no way he doesn't play, by the end Messi is looking for him.”

Alexander-Arnold responds to Carragher claim

Trent Alexander-Arnold has already revealed his ambitions to lead Liverpool amid Jamie Carragher’s claims that he could go on to captain the club.

Speaking back in 2021, he said: “It's about just winning things, leading the team as well in certain ways, being more of a leader on the pitch, off the pitch for the younger players. Establishing myself in those kind of roles as a leader would be something I've got my eye on.”

Meanwhile, Carragher has also claimed that Liverpool do not need to spend £100m on a new midfielder, with Alexander-Arnold more than capable of deputising in the role.
