Liverpool must avoid Cristiano Ronaldo issue as FSG could pose January problem

I would like to see Liverpool target a midfielder in the January transfer window, possibly even a striker or an attacking midfielder, who can change a game when things aren’t going our way. But the problem with that is the owners, Fenway Sports Group, are reportedly looking to sell the football club. Any transfer activity will surely depend on the FSG's future because they are unlikely to spend big money if they are looking to sell the club.

If a player is available for £50m or £80m FSG are unlikely to pay that type of money because it would be a waste if they are looking to sell, in my opinion. I think getting a player through the door in January will only happen if the club is sold or if there is a significant injection of cash from a shareholder.

If that happens, I can see Liverpool going out and getting a player of really high quality. If an individual or a group comes in - whether that buy for a full sale or as shareholders - and have got money to help us get back to where we want, then something in the January window could possibly happen. If Jurgen Klopp says that he wants a player any new investors will surely back him. I think the window will depend on the ownership situation and how that develops, that is the key.

However, when everyone is back from injuries we’re not too far short. I know the fans want to see us associated with big players and qualify for the Champions League. But if we get someone through the door before the next round against Real Madrid, that could be very advantageous for us and our chances of winning the competition.

As we have seen with Cristiano Ronaldo since he returned to Manchester United last summer, you can’t bring someone into the dressing room who is going to upset the applecart. You have to trust the manager to get those calls right, which I’m sure he will do. He has not signed anyone with an oversized ego since he joined the club and as a result, Liverpool have a really great squad harmony.

Look at Mario Balotelli when he came to the club in 2014, after they lost Luis Suarez, he was no good in the dressing room and caused well-known disruption. Liverpool will always look into what a player is like in the dressing room and have done for years. That won’t change now.
