Liverpool MP calls for urgent action from Premier League over vile Hillsborough chants

A Labour MP has called on the Premier League to act urgently following a rise in vile Hillsborough chants at various Liverpool games.

Reds fans have been subject to disgusting taunts in recent weeks, including opposition fans chanting 'always the victims, it's never your fault' - a cruel jibe with links to the disaster that took the lives of 97 Liverpool supporters. Manchester City were forced to issue an apology condemning the chants and promising to punish any fans caught singing them.

Just one week later, a number of fans of Nottingham Forest - the very club who were at Hillsborough on that day in 1989 - aimed the same song towards the Liverpool away end. And now Labour MP for West Derby Ian Byrne, a Hillsborough survivor and leader of the Real Truth Legacy Project, has written to the league in a bid to force action and education.

Within the letter sent to the Premier League, Bryne said: "Since the events of the UEFA final in Paris we have seen many survivors triggered and struggling, tragically three survivors have taken their own lives this year alone and two since Paris.

"The Premier League has a duty of care to these supporters and the incessant chanting that is now a weekly occurrence must be tackled at the root causes."

He continued: "It is apparent that we need to work with supporters across the country now and I am therefore requesting that you meet me to discuss the Real Truth Legacy Project and the other strands of it that I have been working on creating a tool kit to be used by groups and organisations.

"I cannot stress the detrimental impact these chants are having on the families of the 97, the survivors and their families. Enough really is enough and we need actions now from the Premier League and all football clubs involved to ensure that this stops."
