Liverpool: Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk 'set to sign new contracts' as agreements near

Liverpool are confident both Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk will sign new contracts, with the club closing in on agreements for the star pair.

Talisman Salah and captain Van Dijk are both out of contract at the end of the season along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is expected to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.

The Times reports that there has now been a breakthrough in negotiations with Van Dijk and the expectation is Salah will follow suit by also putting pen to paper.

Van Dijk, 33, last week dropped the biggest hint yet that he was set to sign an extension, coming "progress" had been made, before underling his "love" for the clubs and its fans.

It has been reported that Van Dijk was looking for a fresh two-year commitment.

Lengthy contract talks with Salah have also involved contract length, while The Times reports that the Egyptian - who has provided 32 goals and 22 assists this season - would not be seeing his salary reduced.

Clubs in Saudi Arabia have courted Salah for two years, but he now looks set to extend his stay at Anfield.

Alexander-Arnold, however, is expected to leave for Spain with Real Madrid confident of wrapping up a bumper deal for him to move on a Bosman transfer.

The reaction to Alexander-Arnold's reported decision has been met with a significant backlash from some sections of the fanbase, with the right-back branded a "traitor" for wanting a new challenge after 21 years at the club.
