Liverpool midfielder assesses Nottingham Forest plight after dismantling relegation rivals Leeds

Liverpool are expecting a “battle” with Nottingham Forest this weekend but midfielder Curtis Jones says his and his team-mates' tails are up after dismantling another relegation-battling side.

Jurgen Klopp’s side bounced back from a five-game winless streak on Monday night with a 6-1 thrashing of Leeds, the German describing the performances as their best of the season.

The result was good news for Forest in their battle against the drop, with Leeds only two points ahead, but it does mean Steve Cooper takes his players to a confident Anfield this week.

Ahead of the game, Jones told the club’s media channels: “We'll forget about this (Leeds) game and look ahead. Forest is a team, again, that's in a position where they're trying to stay up.

“It's a hard time for them as well, so they will be turning up to give a battle. We're the same as well. It will be a hard game again but we're ready and the confidence is up.”

The result at Elland Road keeps Liverpool well in the race for European football, if an outsider to qualify for the Champions League, meaning they’re unlikely to take their foot off the gas at home, where they have only lost once in the Premier League.

For Forest, they’re trying to end a 10-match winless run to lift themselves out of the relegation zone. If they sit deep, it could force Liverpool to play riskier passes to try to break them down, but Jones knows they can just as quickly win the ball back.

The 22-year-old said: “You can talk about the goals and we scored six, but the biggest thing was the energy and the determination of the whole team.

“We were up against a team that sat deep, so we had to risk the ball a bit more. But we would give away the ball and then the whole team worked their socks off. Happy days.

“It's not been a season the way we thought it would go but we've stuck together as a team and we've got the fans there as well, so we're all as one. There were six great goals, so it was a great day out there.”
