Liverpool line ups as Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho decisions made for Manchester United

Liverpool are back in action for a brand new season today when they play their first pre-season friendly against Manchester United in Bangkok.

The Reds will have new signings Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho in their squad for the clash with their rivals. But which line-up should they start with? Our writers have made their picks.

LIVE: Liverpool vs Manchester United updates from Bangkok

Ian Doyle: The first game of pre-season for Liverpool, and what a game. Manchester United, the bitter North West rivals, here in a humid Bangkok.

There will no doubt be the plethora of substitutions with the majority of players easing their way into their preparations.

But it will nevertheless be interesting to see who Jurgen Klopp turns to from the start, although those who played in the summer internationals should be held back for the most part.

In goal, Adrian. Trent Alexander-Arnold can feature at right-back with Kostas Tsimikas on the other flank, and Joe Gomez and Joel Matip the centre-backs.

In midfield, Jordan Henderson can skipper the side with Harvey Elliott and man-machine James Milner also starting.

Up front, Roberto Firmino can play down the middle, with new boy Fabio Carvalho on the right and Luis Diaz on the left.

My team: Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Matip, Tsimikas; Henderson, Milner; Elliott, Carvalho, Diaz, Firmino

Keifer Macdonald: Given that it's Liverpool's first game of pre-season, wholesale changes will be expected throughout.

Though it seems Jurgen Klopp will have just the 36 players to choose from on Tuesday afternoon after Diogo Jota ruled himself out of contention for this one as he continues to recover from the hamstring injury he suffered while on Portugal duty in June. This means Darwin Nunez should get a run out of some kind, whether that is from the start or not will depend on if he's healed from the minor blisters he suffered in Monday's session, but don't rule out Liverpool's new evolution beginning at the Rajamangala National Stadium with the Uruguayan playing ahead of Roberto Firmino.

Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho all returned to pre-season training last Monday, so seeing them from the off in Bangkok would certainly be no surprise. However, their involvement could come in a new-look 4-2-3-1 with the Reds' elder statesmen holding the fort while the former Fulham youngsters are handed the freedom to operate further forward.

Joe Gomez seems to have impressed during the early stages of summer training and after penning a new deal this summer he could be the man to pair up with Joel Matip as he aims to get his 2022/23 off to a flyer.

My team: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Matip, Robertson; Henderson, Milner; Elliott, Firmino, Carvalho; Nunez

Joe Rimmer: And so a new season begins.

And a new forward to spearhead Jurgen Klopp's team in the shape of Darwin Nunez.

I'd start the £85m man today. What better way to announce yourself to your new supporters with an appearance - and hopefully - a goal against their bitter rivals?

I'd play him off the left with Roberto Firmino down the middle and Luis Diaz on the opposite flank. There's always a chance, though, that we see a new Liverpool formation today, which Klopp has hinted at previously.

Jordan Henderson and James Milner can support Harvey Elliott in midfield, while Joe Gomez and Joel Matip line up with Kostas Tsimikas and Trent Alexander-Arnold either side of them in a strong back four.

My team: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Matip, Tsimikas; Henderson, Milner; Elliott, Diaz, Nunez, Firmino
