Sander Westerveld
Held one Roger Garcia long-range strike well before keeping out a Roberto Trashorras free kick. Gave the Kop a scare by letting one Daniel Agger pass roll across the line before passing it on.
Glen Johnson
Got forward really well in the first half. Won the ball back in the final third to help create the first chance of the game. One of the only players on the pitch who actually still has the legs to play wing-back.
Jamie Carragher
Enjoyed his battle with Javier Saviola. Entertained the crowd by sliding to keep one overhit Fabio Aurelio pass in play and performing a cheeky Cruyff turn. Carragher also earned a few chuckles by lying down behind the wall as Rivaldo stood over a free-kick, though Phil Thompson wasn’t impressed on commentary! Returned to replace the injured Phil Babb and helped shore up an outnumbered defence.

Sami Hyypia
A colossus as the central defender and one of the stand-out performers. Positioning so good, getting on the end of everything in his own box and passed it around well. Had a header cleared off the line at the other end.
Daniel Agger
Liverpool ’s fittest player on the pitch by the looks of it, and the best performer as a result. Could still be playing, if not for those injuries. Still loves a mazy run forward. Came back on for the injured Vladimir Smicer in the second half. One great tackle on Luis Garcia when the Reds were caught out at the back.
Fabio Aurelio
His left foot is a wand. Beauty of a cross to Garcia only for the Spaniard to head wide and so smart in possession when given time on the ball. Created a couple of openings that Liverpool failed to take.
Bjorn-Tore Kvarme
Yeah, definitely a defender in midfield. Passing not the best but got a good tackle in on Rivaldo. Told to slow down and save his legs by Steven Gerrard at one point. Went on one mad run forward yet had no-one in support.
Salif Diao
Clumsy in the tackle and went through Edgar Davids with a lunge early on. We were used to seeing that in his playing days. Cheeky no-look backheel pass moments later. Don’t recall him ever doing that, mind!
Steven Gerrard
The only Liverpool player to last the 90 minutes, he dictated play as the number 10. Crowd so excited whenever he got on the ball and one of the few players who can still run. Won a stonewall early penalty off Edmilson before stepping up to score. Bent one long-range effort wide before being denied by Jesus Angoy when one-on-one. One long-range effort saved in stoppage-time as it didn’t quite happen in the second half. No Roy of the Rovers Steven Gerrard ending this time.
Dirk Kuyt
Lovely through-ball to Gerrard which led to the early spot-kick. Denied Liverpool’s second with a great curling effort that Angoy acrobatically tipped over. Reminder that the Barca keeper is 55. Wouldn’t have known it from his performance! Came back on late on for Patrick Berger as the Reds chased an equaliser and nearly scored immediately before heading a good chance wide.
Luis Garcia
Agent Garcia? Not the best 45 minutes in red from the Spaniard before switching sides at half-time. Similar tale for Barcelona though, perhaps he didn't want upset any of his former team-mates? Had an early shot blocked from Gerrard’s cutback before heading a good chance wide. Sporadic passing and offside a couple times, but did set up his captain with a couple of long-passes. Missed a good chance for Barcelona too when getting in behind Jason McAteer.
SUBS
Jerzy Dudek (Westerveld, 46)
Made a couple of good saves but could do nothing about Rivaldo’s penalty despite mini spaghetti-legs. Little to do as the half wore on until denying both Oriol Riera and Gaizka Mendieta.
Jason McAteer (Johnson, 46)
Shoved off the ball too easily by Mendieta early in the second half. Couldn’t get near Garcia when sprinting back, but did well to stay on his feet and not fall over. Showed a bit more pace to get forward and cross. Very sweaty and tired late on.
Phil Babb (Carragher, 46)
One of the oldest players in the Reds squad. Conceded a penalty against Giovanni. Then went off injured in the 67th minute.
Jose Enrique (Hyypia, 46)
Started the second half at centre-back yet still looked to attack before switching to left-back as injuries forced a Liverpool re-shuffle. Got forward well but the defence were maybe a little exposed as a result. Committed a couple of clumsy fouls. One great cross for Kuyt late on.
Stewart Downing (Aurelio, 46)
Only retired in the summer and you could certainly tell as the half wore on. Started the second half at left-back before moving to the right-wing after Vladimir Smicer’s injury. Arguably the best player on the pitch following the positional change as he repeatedly ran at the Barcelona defence. Blazed one good effort just over. Father Time might be catching up on some of the elder legends, but the likes of Downing and Agger could be welcome younger legs and fresh blood if this debut is anything to go by.
Vladimir Smicer (On for Agger, 46)
Looked to get forward but only lasted 20 minutes before going off injured. Took a painful blow to his hand in the corner in front of the Kop.
Patrick Berger (On for Diao, 46)
Playing in midfield, looked to get forward into the box but was reluctant to shoot in total contrast to his playing days. Put in a couple of good crosses. Replaced by Kuyt in the 83rd minute.
Steve McManaman (On for Kvarme, 46)
Similar performance to Berger in midfield, as Liverpool were left perhaps lacking an enforcer as a result. Still one of the fittest players on the legends scene though, getting forward and putting in some decent crosses.
Maxi Rodriguez (On for Garcia, 46)
Another player who has only recently retired yet not as lively as Downing. No longer runs down the wing. He is 41, though. Passed it around well in midfield and had a couple of half-chances. Bent one late strike over the bar.
Milan Baros (On for Kuyt, 46)
Missed a glorious close-range effort in front of the Kop with the goal gaping. An enthusiastic runner though, just like his playing days, but often found himself outnumbered.
