Liverpool legend says club missed out on 'great signing' as rivals sealed £35m deal

Liverpool legend John Barnes has named the midfielder who would have been a “great signing” for the club.

The Reds continue to be linked with a host of potential new midfielders as the transfer window nears its conclusion. Injuries to key players such as Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita, among others, have led to speculation that a new signing is needed.

One player who will not be available this summer is Yves Bissouma. Tottenham Hotspur signed the midfielder earlier this summer from Brighton for £35million, while Liverpool were themselves tentatively linked for his services.

Barnes reckons that Bissouma would have been an ideal new addition for Liverpool this summer.

"Like I’ve already said from last year, Yves Bissouma would have been a great signing (for Liverpool),” Barnes told BonusCodeBets .

"Regardless of what actually went on, he went to Tottenham and you can see how strong Tottenham are that Yves Bissouma is now in the team. Now Liverpool look a bit light in midfield and the transfer window is still open but it has to make sense."

Barnes added: “Any signings have to make sense. We’re not going to panic buy. We’re not going to just buy someone as other clubs probably would because they feel under pressure.”

Liverpool have endured a relatively poor start to the season, picking up just two points from a possible nine from their first three Premier League fixtures. Barnes believes that Jurgen Klopp will still having the backing from fans, and went on to make another claim about a possible pursuit for a new midfielder.

“I think Jurgen Klopp has enough money in the bank with the fans and with people for them to still have faith in him,” said Barnes. "But obviously if it makes sense and there could be a player that improves us then I’m sure they’ll make that decision.”
