Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher launches Gareth Southgate defence after Trent Alexander-Arnold snub

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has launched a staunch defence of Gareth Southgate amid the ongoing criticism of the England manager.

The Three Lions were held to a 3-3 draw with Germany on Monday night in their final Nations League fixture. Southgate’s side were relegated from their group, and have now played their last match before the upcoming World Cup.

Before the game against Germany, the headlines were dominated by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exclusion from the matchday squad. The Liverpool right-back was not included by Southgate in the squad for the match, which caused a stir among the football community.

After the draw with Germany, England haven’t won any of their last six matches, with their last victory coming in a friendly against the Ivory Coast in March. This form has led to questions over Southgate's position as England manager, but Carragher questioned the response from the footballing community.

Carragher wrote on Twitter: “You would think England had won numerous tournaments considering the stick Southgate is getting!

“It had been s***e for years before he got the job. Big Sam [Allardyce] had the job before him!!”

Clarifying his point about Allardyce, Carragher added in another tweet: "Big Sam has achieved more in management, but England having a manager who plays direct/percentage football is not right."

England's next match is their World Cup opener against Iran on November 21. They will then face the United States and Wales in their other two Group B matches.
