Liverpool learn pathway to European final as highly-rated forward eyes Golden Boot

While European champions Real Madrid stand in the way of Liverpool’s last remaining hopes of silverware in the Champions League round-of-16 later this month, the Reds’ Under-19s have found out who they must overcome if they are to win this season’s UEFA Youth League.

The young Reds booked their place in the Youth League round-of-16 after finishing top of their group after winning five of their six matches against Ajax, Rangers, and Napoli.

Following completion of the play-off round, Liverpool have been drawn at home to FC Porto in the round-of-16, with the tie to be played over one leg on February 28 or March 1. Meanwhile, should they knock out the Portuguese outfit, the young Reds will travel to either Sporting Lisbon or Ajax for the quarter-finals on March 14 or March 15.

All matches are one-off games, and if level after 90 minutes go straight to penalties.

Meanwhile, as in previous seasons, the semi-finals and final are played at Colovray Stadium in Nyon, Switzerland, with the four-team knockout finals taking place in April.

Liverpool Under-19s would face one of Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar, Real Madrid, and Red Bull Salzburg in their semi-final which would take place on April 21.

Should they reach the final, they will lock horns with one of Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Hajduk Split, Manchester City, AC Milan, Ruh Lviv, Atletico Madrid, or Genk.

Benfica won the tournament last season as Liverpool were knocked out by Juventus in the quarter-finals. That marks the furthest the Reds have progressed in the UEFA Youth League.

Highly-rated striker Oakley Cannonier, who was the ballboy who famously passed the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold for Divock Origi's 'corner taken quickly' winner against Barcelona in the 2019 Champions League semi-finals, is currently the Reds' leading goalscorer in the tournament, having scored seven goals from four group-stage appearances, with only two players boasting more in this year’s Youth League to date.
