Liverpool receive £41.8m boost despite Man City title heartbreak
Liverpool have scooped an impressive £41.8million boost despite being pipped to the title by Manchester City on the final day of the Premier League season.
The Reds headed into their final league game of the season against Bruno Lage's side needing to beat Wolves and hope City were beaten by Aston Villa at the Etihad. And for a while, it looked like things were falling into shape for Jurgen Klopp's side.
At one point City were 2-0 down to Steven Gerrard's side, while Liverpool were being held by Wolves. But three goals in six minutes turned the title race on its head.
Ilkay Gundogan bagged a brace in between Rodri's strike to hand City a 3-2 win. While Liverpool eventually overcame Wolves thanks to late goals from Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.
But as result of their second place finish, the Reds have scooped £41.8million in Premier League prize money. A title win would have seen Liverpool pocket £44million.
Half of the TV jackpot is split evenly between the clubs, which gave each side around £84m ($104m) during the 2020/21 Premier League season. A quarter is used as prize money — officially called merit payments — and a quarter is divided up according to various factors, including how often clubs have appeared in televised games.
