Liverpool 'leading race' to sign £35m midfielder linked with Tottenham

There has been an update on the future of reported Liverpool transfer target Sofyan Amrabat.

Amrabat has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool over the last few months. The Reds were first credited with an interest in the player during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 26-year-old starred for Morocco at the tournament in the Middle East. Amrabat helped his country reach the semi-final of the tournament, eventually losing to runner-sup France.

Since then, rumours have been swirling over whether a club will make a move for the Fiorentina midfielder. Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid are the three clubs whose names have been most linked with the player.

According to Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato, Liverpool are now the club leading the race to sign Amrabat. However, it is added that any deal will not be possible until the summer at the earliest.

Fiorentina’s chief executive Joe Barone has already stated publicly that Amrabat will not be leaving the Serie A club this month. Despite this, it hasn’t stopped rumours linking the likes of Liverpool with a move.

The report adds that Fiorentina’s asking price of €40m (£35m) is what put clubs, such as Liverpool, off making an offer this month. But it's stated that the Reds are in the “front row” and still have hopes of signing Amrabat.
