Liverpool John Lennon Airport explains why emergency services are out in force

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (JLA) explained why emergency services were out in force at the site.

The airport, based in Speke, posted on Twitter to warn people "not to be alarmed" when they see emergency service crews, including from police, ambulance and fire. A spokesperson from JLA said this was due to an exercise which will be taking place this morning.

According to the airport, this is a regular exercise which takes place to test plans in place for emergency services response in the event of an incident at the airport. JLA added it will be "business as usual" for all flights due to operate today.

A spokesperson for the airport said on Twitter: "This morning, we’ll be having one of our regular exercises to test plans in place for emergency services response in the event of an incident at the airport. However, it will remain business as usual for all flights due to operate today, so please don't be alarmed."

This week, it was announced passengers could fly from Liverpool to the USA via Iceland after airline PLAY arrived at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The budget Icelandic airline's first service from Reykjavik landed at Liverpool on Friday, October 7 and was welcomed with an aircraft 'baptism' from Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service as it taxied towards the terminal.

Members of staff from the airport and PLAY cut a ribbon outside the aircraft to declare the route open. PLAY will operate flights between Liverpool and Iceland on Mondays and Fridays.

Once passengers get to Keflavík International Airport, they can then change onto services to American destinations including New York, Boston and Washington DC. The price for a single ticket from Liverpool to Iceland will begin at £41, while flights to New York begin at £116.
