Liverpool in the running for Darwin Nunez amid Manchester United transfer links

Darwin Nunez is on Liverpool’s transfer shortlist amid reports linking the Benfica striker with a move to Manchester United.

Nunez is being heavily linked with a move away from Portugal after enjoying an outstanding season. The Uruguay international bagged 34 goals in 41 appearances during the 2021/22 campaign, leading to plenty of interest ahead of the transfer window.

United are among the clubs to have been linked with a potential move. They'll be in the market for new forwards this summer, with Edinson Cavani’s departure leaving Cristiano Ronaldo as the club’s only recognised number nine.

If they are to try and secure Nunez’s services, they may have to beat their great rivals to his signature. According to the Liverpool Echo, the 22-year-old is one of a number of forwards being assessed by the Anfield outfit as they prepare for life without Sadio Mane.

The Senegal international could leave Liverpool this summer, with Bayern Munich favourites to land the 30-year-old. A £25million opening bid from the German champions has been rejected.

The report says Nunez has emerged as one of the leading names being discussed by Liverpool’s recruitment team following his outstanding season in Lisbon. Jurgen Klopp’s side are said to be unwilling to pay over the odds in their attempts to add to their forward line.

Nunez has been touted with an £85million move this summer, with Benfica looking to engineer a big-money deal similar to the one which saw Joao Felix move to Atletico Madrid. As well as United, Newcastle have also been suggested as a possible destination.

Liverpool and United are now considered joint-favourites to land Nunez this summer, with both sides at 6/4 with SkyBet. Newcastle and Real Madrid are further back at 12/1, while Atletico and Paris Saint-Germain are considered outsiders at 16/1.
