Liverpool hope to open Jurgen Klopp contract talks after agent makes Anfield visit

Liverpool are hopeful of persuading Jurgen Klopp to sign a new contract to keep him at the club beyond 2024.

Marc Kosicke, Klopp’s agent, was in attendance at Anfield for Wednesday's Champions League semi-final first leg win over Villarreal, along with FSG president Mike Gordon.

The German boss has previously indicated that he would walk away from the club at the end of his current deal, but Reds chiefs have been getting positive noises that he would be open to extending his stay.

Talks have been advancing over a new deal in recent weeks, and Klopp has become more open to the idea of staying at a club he joined from Borussia Dortmund in 2015.

The Liverpool manager has begun introducing younger players into his squad in recent months, with the likes of Ibrahima Konate, Diogo Jota and January signing Luis Diaz all seen as crucial to the next few years.

The Reds have won the Premier League, Champions League and League Cup under Klopp's stewardship, the latter competition in February, and are still on course for a remarkable quadruple success this season as they sit second in the top-flight and have reached the FA Cup final and Champions League semi-final.

They won 2-0 against Villarreal on on Wednesday night to place one foot in a third Champions League final under the German.

Speaking after the win, Klopp said: "The full work. Nothing happened yet, that’s how it is. For me, it’s the best example, you play a game and it’s 2-0 at half-time [then] you have to be completely on alert.

"You have to be 100 per cent in the right mood, you have to play the second half like you played the first half.

"There is nothing to defend [and] if you do that you [lose] immediately all the advantages you might have had before. We know we go there and it will be a tricky atmosphere for us and different from tonight.

"Their players, you saw it tonight, they fight with all they have and what I like [is] that everybody could see that we fought with all we have.

"It’s always the same. If they beat us with a result that brings them to the final, then they deserve it and if not then we deserve it. That’s how the competition is. We played a really good game and now in five days we will play again and we have to make sure that we are ready."
