Liverpool 'hold talks' for Frimpong transfer as Celtic in line for hefty windfall

Liverpool have reportedly held initial talks over a transfer swoop for Jeremie Frimpong.

It's claimed Anfield chiefs are interested in signing the former Celtic full-back from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.

Sources have told the PA news agency that talks are at an early stage. Frimpong could be signed by Liverpool to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold who has been linked with Real Madrid.

It's claimed Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are also interested in Frimpong, who has a reported release clause of £34m.

Any transfer deal will have a significant impact on Celtic, with the club holding a sell-on clause as part of the sale of Frimpong to the Bundesliga club in 2021.

Should Frimpong be sold for £34m then the total profit made by the German side would come to around £22.2m, this would result in Celtic raking in £6.7m.

Leverkusen chief executive Fernando Carro previously admitted the club will likely sell one key player in the summer.

He said: "Every year we need to sell one big player to find budget for new signings.

"So, probably we will sell one player. We're planning to sign two or three players with that amount of money."

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano previously hinted at a move for Frimpong this summer.

He posted: "Jeremie Frimpong remains one to watch in the summer.

"Dutch right-back could leave Leverkusen in the summer with many clubs interested.

"The clause in his contract is worth a fee of around €40m."
