Liverpool hit with fine as FA release statement on Man City incident

Liverpool have been fined by the Football Association for failing to control their play during their defeat to Manchester City at the start of this month.

Despite taking the lead at the Etihad Stadium through Mohamed Salah, Jurgen Klopp’s side were eventually beaten 4-1. Julian Alvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish were all on target for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Despite that, there was some controversy as Rodri was somewhat fortunate to avoid picking up two quickfire bookings and simultaneously steered away from a dismissal.

The Reds players surrounded referee Simon Hooper after the Spanish midfielder had pulled back Cody Gakpo with both arms, moments after being booked for an equally cynical challenge on Diogo Jota to stop two counter-attacks.

But Liverpool have now been fined for the way members of Jurgen Klopp’s side acted following the challenge by Rodri. The fine was issued by an Independent Regulatory Commission following an FA hearing.

“Liverpool FC have been fined £37,500 after its players surrounded the match official during the 34th minute of their Premier League game against Manchester City on Saturday 1 April 2023,” a statement from the FA read.

“The club admitted failing to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and do not behave in a way which is improper. An Independent Regulatory Commission imposed Liverpool FC’s fine following a subsequent hearing.”
