Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher admits he would love his former club to swoop in for Mason Mount amid heavy-handed interest from rivals Manchester United.
Having already signed Alexis Mac Allister this summer, Liverpool will continue to prioritise further recruits in their engine room. Mount, 24, was among those being looked at due to his contract standstill.
United are in the driving seat when it comes to signing the Chelsea midfielder, though, with personal terms now agreed. Reports from Sky Sports report a formal bid is set to follow in the coming days and all roads appear to be heading to Old Trafford for the sought-after 36-cap England international.
It's proposed Mount will be signed by United to partner Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in their first-choice three next season. However, according to Carragher - speaking with the Metro - his international colleague, Declan Rice, would be a better fit for United as he maintains some hope Mount could follow Mac Allister to Anfield.

Carragher, 45, said: "Mason Mount is an upgrade on Christian Eriksen in terms of where he plays. But going back to Declan Rice, United are one of the few teams at the top who don't play a 4-3-3, it's usually two [sitting] midfielders with Bruno Fernandes [playing as a number 10]."
He added: "Rice and Mount, they are very different players and it shouldn't be one or the other, but when you look at what Manchester United have got right now, Declan Rice would be a better fit.
"I do think he [Mount] is a good player and I like him, I wanted Liverpool to get him. Loads of coaches have picked him and they like him. There is already a good player in there, but Rice would suit United more than Mount in terms of how they set up."
